Precision Retention Shooting - Pistol
Basic Pistol — Critical Incident Response Training Precision Retention Shooting for the Armed Citizen — Beginner Pistol Length: 6 hours (Indoor Range — The Gun Shop & Gun Range) Are you ready to move beyond static range drills and train for what really matters in a hostile, high-stress encounter? This intensive 6-hour course combines classroom, hands-on retention work, and live-fire application to teach you how to keep control of your pistol and deliver accurate, decisive shots when the situation is chaotic. What makes this course different? Many defensive encounters are dynamic and physical, you must not only shoot well, you must retain and control your firearm while under stress, near others, and while moving. Our Precision Retention curriculum teaches you that blend of skills so you can remain the best chance for your family’s safety. Course Breakdown •3-Hour Classroom & Drill Session: Learn the mechanics and mindset of Precision Retention Shooting. We cover proper grip under stress, compression and retention drills, weapon presentation and re-presentation, close-quarters muzzle awareness, and practical retention techniques used when an assailant is in contact or grappling for your gun. Students practice dry-fire drills to build safe, repeatable motor patterns. •3-Hour Live-Fire Range Evolution: Start with fundamentals to sharpen accuracy, then progress to dynamic transitions, multiple targets, movement, weapon re-presentation, and shooting until the threat ends (no preplanned single-round counts). Emphasis is on controlled, accurate follow-up shots, muzzle discipline, and maintaining retention while reloading and moving. Course Requirements & Logistics •Ammunition: 300 rounds required (bring quality defensive-type ammo). •Gear: Holster (only for dry fire training), at least 3 magazines, eye & ear protection, comfortable range clothing (no open shirts or open toed shoes). •Firearm Rentals: Available by advance coordination, contact 802-349-8080 before class to reserve. •Skill Level: Beginner pistol friendly, but physically and mentally demanding. Advanced Pistol — Critical Incident Response Training Precision Retention Shooting for the Armed Citizen — Advanced Pistol (6 hours) Push your skill ceiling. This is not a static clinic, it’s an intense, all-range, hands-on evolution of your defensive pistol work designed for the armed citizen who trains with purpose. Over six high-energy hours at Ares Training Facility you’ll move, think, and shoot like you would in a critical incident. What you’ll do and learn •From fundamentals to fury: Quick refresh of defensive shooting basics, then immediately build into dynamic stress-shooting drills. •Precision retention under pressure: Learn and apply retention-oriented grips and transitions that keep your gun where it belongs when the fight goes chaotic. •Multiple-target engagement: Engage several threats quickly and accurately while learning to look in front of and around targets, increase situational awareness without sacrificing hits. •Movement is mandatory: This is a physical course , you’ll move up and down the range, shoot on the move, and practice realistic repositioning and cover work. •Stress training: Timed, high-adrenaline scenarios that force you to apply skills under pressure and build resilient muscle memory. Logistics & requirements •Location: Ares Training Facility •Duration: 6 hours — ALL range time •Gear you must bring: Outside-the-waistband (OWB) holster, minimum three magazines and magazine holders. •Ammunition: Minimum 300 rounds required. •Rentals: Firearms and holsters available to rent first come, first served. •Recommended: Prior completion of basic defensive shooting training or equivalent experience. Advanced Rifle — Critical Incident Response Training Precision Retention: Rifle ↔ Pistol Transition for the Armed Citizen — Advanced (6 hours) Push your skillset into the next gear. This is an advanced, all-range MSR-to-pistol transition course for the armed citizen who trains with intent, built to teach you smooth, safe, and lightning-fast transitions between rifle and pistol under stress. Course flow •Range Classroom & dry review (brief): Start the day with the fundamentals of safe, efficient rifle-to-pistol and pistol-to-rifle transitions, body position, muzzle management, and gear setup. •All-range, high-tempo training: Move straight into progressive live-fire drills and stress courses that force you to apply transitions while moving, engaging multiple targets, and managing malfunction or reloads on the move. •Scenario-driven stress work: Timed drills, multiple-target arrays, and movement downrange to build realistic, repeatable skills. Requirements & recommendations •Duration: 6 hours, ALL range time •Ammo: Recommended 200 rounds for your MSR (.22/.223/5.56) and 300 rounds for your pistol. •Rifle setup: Slings are mandatory (2-point sling recommended). Course may be run using a CMMG conversion kit (5.56 to .22LR). •Magazines: Minimum 3 AR magazines with a secure way to carry them (pouches, chest rig, etc.). •Pistol gear: OWB holster required; 3 pistol magazines with magazine holders. •Physical demand: This is a physically demanding course, you will be moving up and down lanes, shooting on the move, and working through dynamic positions. •Rentals: Firearms or conversion kits may be available to rent on a first-come basis (confirm ahead if needed).
