Last-Minute Hurricane Prep: Essential Steps to Secure Your Home and Family

ree

As Hurricane Helene approaches, expected to bring significant tropical storm conditions to Lake, Marion, and Sumter counties, it's essential to take immediate action during the final 8 hours before landfall. Helene is predicted to bring heavy rainfall, with some areas potentially receiving 2-5 inches, along with wind gusts exceeding 40 mph, which can lead to power outages and damage to homes. Tornado warnings have also been issued for parts of Central Florida, adding further urgency.

Here’s what you need to do:

1. Secure Outdoor Items

Bring in or securely fasten outdoor furniture, grills, and any loose items that could become dangerous projectiles in high winds. Remove dead or loose tree branches near your home, as these could cause damage during the storm.

2. Check Windows and Doors

Ensure all windows and doors are properly sealed. If you have shutters, secure them in place, and consider boarding up windows if you’re in a vulnerable area. Don’t forget to brace your garage door, as it can be a weak point in your home’s defenses.

3. Prep an Emergency Kit

By now, you should have an emergency kit ready, including essentials like water, non-perishable food, batteries, flashlights, a first-aid kit, and any necessary medications. Be sure to charge all electronic devices and have a battery-powered radio for weather updates.

4. Prepare Your Pets

Make sure you have food, water, and necessary items like leashes or crates ready for your pets. If you need to evacuate, take them with you—never leave them behind.

5. Stage Important Items

Move valuables, important documents, and electronics to higher ground to avoid water damage from potential flooding. Place essential items in an easy-to-reach location in case you need to evacuate quickly.

6. Plan for Power Outages

Expect power outages to be a possibility due to strong winds. Set your fridge and freezer to the coldest settings so that food lasts longer if the power goes out. Unplug appliances and electronics to avoid damage from power surges.
