Protecting Houses of Worship: Preparedness, Training, and the Run-Hide-Fight Response

In today’s world, churches, synagogues, mosques, and other houses of worship face a growing threat of targeted violence. While faith communities are built on peace, compassion, and inclusion, they are not immune to tragedy. From Charleston to Sutherland Springs, and more recently across the country, the rise in attacks on religious institutions demands that we take security seriously, without compromising the spirit of worship.
Responding to the Unthinkable: The Run-Hide-Fight Model
In the event of an active shooter or violent intruder, one of the most widely accepted models for civilian response is Run, Hide, Fight:
RUN – If there is a clear and safe escape path, leave immediately. Encourage others to come but do not let them slow you down.
HIDE – If escape is not possible, find a place to hide where the attacker is less likely to find you. Lock or barricade doors, silence your phone, and remain quiet.
FIGHT – As a last resort, if your life is in imminent danger, commit to aggressive action. Use improvised weapons and overwhelm the attacker.
This model has saved lives in schools, businesses, and, tragically, in houses of worship. However, knowing the model isn’t enough. Training is what makes the difference between panic and purposeful action.
Understanding Florida Law: Concealed Carry in Churches and Religious Institutions
In Florida, there’s a critical distinction every parishioner and safety team member must understand: Permitless carry DOES NOT allow you to carry a firearm inside a house of worship.
To legally carry a firearm in a place of worship in Florida, you must have a valid Florida Concealed Weapon or Firearm License (CWFL). Failing to comply with this law can lead to serious legal consequences—even for well-intentioned individuals trying to protect their congregation.
The Case for Formal Training and Outside Assessments
Houses of worship often rely on volunteers or retired professionals to provide safety and security. While this is a strong start, formal training and professional evaluations can mean the difference between a well-prepared response and tragic failure.
